Old Vines

Domaine Bruno Clavelier

(Vosne-Romanée)

The estate of Bruno Clavelier is in Vosne-Romanée next to the N 74, just aside of Armelle and Bernard Rion. Bruno's father André welcomed us, showed us the vinification - the 1999 was already fermenting in big wooden tanks - and the seller. Bruno Clavelier, who later on joined us at the degustation, counts on old vines and little quantity. That's the way he produces fine and complex Burgundies typical representatives of their appellation by using traditional methods. Like every good vinter wine is not only busyness - you realize his passion and favour for his job - the day after our visit he went to Bordeaux to a degustation. A very friendly source for good Vosne-Romanée. In addition to the 6,5 acre of vineyards there are good climates in Gevrey, Chambolle and Nuits.

In Andre Clavelier' Cellar

whites:

Bourgogne Aligoté 1998
Bright apple in the colour. In taste and fragrance green and yellow apple, some honey in the finish. For an Aligoté very full bodied. Fresh and good.

Vin de Table Cuvée 'Les Glapigny' 1997
A Chardonnay from a nearby area that doesn't count to the Bourgogne Appellation.
Bright tone of honey within the colour. In the nose very mineral, flint-stone, ripe apple and fresh pears. In the mouth good fruit and mineral tones of flint-stone. Strong. Very good and reasonable. Quiet tip!

reds:

Bourgogne Pinot Noir 1997
Red of raspberries. Fragrance of pine forest, cacao and red fruit. In the mouth a bit spicy, some cacao, good Pinot aroma, pepper on the tip of the tongue. Solid, recommendable Bourgogne.

Vosne-Romanée Les Hautes Maizières 1997
A climate placed beneath the 1er Cru Les Suchots. Red of cherries, tones of chocolate and cherries, complex, very good wood, hot on the tongue. Very fine, sweet tannin, good cherry like acidity. Red fruit. Splendid.

Vosne-Romanée La Montagne 1997
Vines over 60 years old on a rocky climate towards the valley leading to Concoeur - great differences in the temperature of day and night giving the wine additional complexity. This climate is a monopol of Clavelier.
Red of raspberries. Rather closed. Mineral. Aroma of wild cherries and cranberries. Fine tannins, elegant acidity, hot on the tip of the tongue. Will have a good time of maturing.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 1997
Dark colours. In the nose still some green swifts and tobacco. In the mouth blackberries and some bitter cacao. Good wood, very long.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d'Orveaux 1997
According to André Clavelier the 70 year old vines grow on a climate above Le Petits Musigny that used to be declared to having the same quality, the Téte de Cuvée before the division in Premier and Grand Crus was made. Perhaps this climate is no Grand Cru, because they had forgotten to apply for it...
Red of garnet. Blueberry, plum and also very nice aroma of violets. In the mouth intensive an full bodied, black current, pepper and tobacco. Very good wine, but still rather closed.
