Charming animal aromas

Henri Pinte

(Aloxe-Corton)

A few years ago we knocked at the door and degustated with an old couple in their living room. The reasonable Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru that we took with us turned out to be a charming, basic and honest Burgundy. And the simple Bourgogne tasted so good that we made a short visit to them. The daughter of both of them offered us in their selling room at the counter a cross-section through their Appellations and vintages.

reds:

Bourgogne 1997
Strawberry. Very intense fragrance of strawberry jam. In the mouth quite good tannin, a bit too long in the open bottle, animal notes, iron (the wine had been open for a while, perhaps beginning oxidation). Good Bourgogne. (32 FF)

Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru 1993
Colour of blackberries. In the fragrance dark berry, vanilla, dark fruit, some red jelly. Good, strong tannin, strong acidity. Fruit a bit in the background, red jelly. Good wine. (71 FF)

Aloxe-Corton 1990
Brick red. Spicy. Papaya and pineapple in the fragrance! A bit shy, needs air. Animal notes, in the finish yellow apple. Good tannin. Perhaps a bit too animal. Not yet mature. Exotic Aloxe-Corton. (95 FF)
