Michele Satta

(Bolgheri)

In the Cellar of Michele Satta

Coming from the sea, shortly before you go up to Castagneto Carducci you take a right turn to Michele Satta, who runs one of the older domains of Bolgheri. He founded it in 1984. His place is built right into the rock. From the tasting room one continues to the wine cellar. The big fermentation barrels have the name of continents - not because the wine is exported there, no, just to distinguish them easily. Satta offers a wide selection of white and red wines.

During degustation one notices that Satta wants to produce independent, unadjusted wines rather than commercial copies of the international mainstream taste. The tasted white wines are very convincing, but I'd have liked to have more acidity in the tasted reds – however, that's a matter of taste anyway. Also, I'd like to taste them again by the more elegant and fine vintages like 2004 and 2006. The vintage of 2006 is expected to be great.

red

Bolgheri Rosso 2006
30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot, 10% Syrah, 10% Teroldego.
Very fruity. In the mouth soft. A slight dull tone in the finish - perhaps the bottle was open for too long? Taste again, but this one didn't suit me too well.
There were 75,000 bottles of the 2005.

Piastraia 2003
25% Merlot, 25% Syrah, 25% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon from the hot vintage of 2003.
Cooked fruit, sweet tannin, tobacco and spice tones. In the mouth I thought there was a lack of acidity. Makes an alcoholic impression (14 %).

Cavaliere 2001
100% Sangiovese.
Very dark, plenty of tannin, but not hard. Caramel and tobacco tones. Warm finish. Perhaps a little sparse acidity for the play?
